Kink Awareness Therapy Training - Session 1

Kink Aware Therapy Training (KATT) – Session 1: Foundations of Kink, BDSM, and Human Sexuality This introductory session provides behavioral health professionals with foundational knowledge of kink, BDSM, consensual power exchange, and the broader context of human sexuality. Participants will explore common terminology, historical and cultural perspectives, media influences, and the role of consent, communication, and negotiated boundaries within kink-informed communities. The session focuses on developing a clinical understanding of kink from a nonjudgmental, culturally responsive perspective while addressing common misconceptions that can contribute to stigma, bias, and inaccurate assessment. Participants will examine the distinctions between consensual kink practices and abuse, explore how media portrayals shape public perception, and gain insight into the diversity of sexual and relational experiences. Special attention is given to understanding sexuality as a spectrum, recognizing the complexity of attraction, identity, desire, and relational preferences, and strengthening clinicians' ability to engage clients with curiosity, humility, and respect. The training emphasizes affirming care practices and supports professionals in creating therapeutic environments where clients feel safe discussing aspects of their identity and relationships without fear of judgment or pathologization.
